1. Fact: The Top Colleges Seek Leaders Who Will Reach the Top.
All of the top schools are looking for future leaders. Why? Because leaders bring good publicity, as in free, positive word-of-mouth. At least college representatives hope it is positive, so they can continue to attract high-achieving applicants. (Did you ever notice how quickly a college acts to quash negative press as in hazing mishaps, racist behavior, and the like?)
Furthermore, leaders tend to become political figures or entrepreneurs; and these types of people can influence policy that affects the educational system of future matriculants AND economic policies. Also, successful individuals may become a source of donations to their alma mater.
