Here are some steps that you DO want to take to demonstrate that you are well-rounded and able to identify your passion.
1. Discover Your Reason for Being.
One reason why I recommend narrowing down your extracurricular activities as a junior or senior is to help discover your passion. Think about what you love doing so much that you would do it for FREE. Why is being passionate so important? Because leaders are passionate. And because the top colleges pride themselves on graduating the “leaders of tomorrow” (who will in turn become prominent alumni, influence key industries and policies, and donate to the college that set them on the right path).
2. Master Your Passion.
High school is a good time to try different activities. However, the activities you do in high school can influence what schools you apply to and which ones admit you. By the time you are a junior, you should have narrowed down your activities so that there are one or two that you excel in or at least devote time to with regularity. You do not have to be the MVP on the team or the star in the play, but you do have to show that you are willing to work for and at something, be challenged, face those challenges head on, and work with others. These are skills that all leaders must have. And you thought “playing nicely” ended in grade school!
