Excel. Pick an extracurricular activity you care about and work at being good if not excellent.
Accountable. Remember you and only you are responsible for making deadlines. Don’t wait until the last minute to request application materials, mail in your application, or ask for a recommendation and expect it to happen. And don’t expect your parents to drive you to FedEx the night before the application is due.
Do your homework (meaning school work), of course, but also do some research about the colleges you’re interested in. We will discuss conducting an effective college search in an upcoming lesson.
Enthusiasm. Be passionate about something and learn how to communicate that passion to someone else so that they can feel the excitement.
Remember to give back, because you are part of a community and a team.
Do NOT make the following mistake, which is #11 on my list of Top Mistakes Made by College Applicants.Presenting yourself as a “leader” when you are not.Do not give yourself the title of President of a small social group that you created with a few buddies and your pet dog. One of my classmates, did this and she did not get into a single college. She listed herself as President of the Bowling Club—a self-appointed post with a bogus, nonexistent “group.” Do not underestimate the intelligence of the admissions staff; it is tacky and unappreciated.
